Empowering Individual Growth Through Personalized Support
Life-Centered Education (LCE) program offers a fully modified, individualized learning experience designed specifically for students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Our program emphasizes the development of independence and essential life skills, focusing on functional academics and daily living tasks that empower students to thrive in both school and beyond. Students in the LCE program benefit from one-on-one support tailored to their unique needs, with personalized instruction provided by highly trained educators and instructional assistants. As part of a comprehensive, team-based approach, students also receive services from Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and School Psychologists, all of whom are embedded in the daily classroom activities. To the fullest extent possible, students are integrated into regular ISB classrooms and extracurricular activities, promoting inclusion and fostering social and academic growth. The LCE program culminates in an LCE Diploma, marking the successful completion of a modified academic pathway that aligns with each student’s developmental progress. Through this collaborative, holistic approach, the LCE program prepares students for increased independence, ensuring they are equipped with the skills they need to succeed in adulthood.
LCE Candidate Profile
Students in this program may be diagnosed with mild intellectual disability or Developmental Disabilities and experience challenges in adaptive functioning, particularly in areas such as communication, social skills, and daily living tasks. They are fully toilet-trained and have no significant medical or mobility concerns. The student demonstrates potential for developing independence with targeted support in self-care, social interactions, and academic skills focused on life readiness. Their program will emphasize functional academics (foundational literacy and math skills), building daily living skills, improving functional communication, and fostering social and self-regulation skills. The student will benefit from pervasive one-on-one or small group instruction, self-regulation support, and family collaboration to ensure progress and a successful transition to greater independence.
LCE Approach: Comprehensive, Individualized, and Inclusive
The LCE program focuses on four strands: functional academics, life skills, well- being and vocational training. Our team of skilled educators, therapists, and support staff collaborates to provide a balanced approach to education, ensuring that students are engaged, challenged, and supported in their personal growth.
Our Functional Academics strand is designed to equip students with essential literacy and mathematics skills crucial for their daily lives and future success. Through highly personalized pathways, these courses focus on enhancing students' foundational knowledge and proficiency in reading, writing, numeracy, and problem-solving. Each course provides practical knowledge, strategies, and resources that aim to promote self-confidence, independence, and readiness for real-world challenges, empowering students to thrive in their post-secondary life.
Our Life Skills strand is designed to empower students in areas crucial to their personal development both at school and in their post-secondary life. Through highly personalized pathways, this strand equips students with the essential skills necessary for school readiness, self-care, personal safety, and content or job-specific success. Each course provides practical knowledge, strategies, and resources to enhance their daily functioning and promote self-confidence.
Our Well-being strand is designed to facilitate students' holistic development, focusing on social pragmatics, social-emotional learning (SEL), and fostering a sense of belonging within a community. Through personalized pathways, this strand equips students with essential skills for building positive relationships, understanding emotions, and developing effective communication and problem-solving strategies. Each course within this strand provides practical knowledge, resources, and supportive strategies to enhance students' emotional well-being, social interactions, and sense of belonging, ultimately promoting self-confidence, resilience, and a positive outlook on life.
Our Vocational strand is designed to prepare students with functional work experiences for employment in a chosen field of interest upon graduation. Starting in 9th grade, students engage in focused inquiry in order to develop an understanding of potential career options and their personal interests. Their identified areas of interest will then be developed into an employment pathway including development of ‘soft skills’ (i.e., time management, social skills, vocabulary, conflict resolution, schedule management, change adaptability) and ‘hard skills’ (i.e., skills explicitly needed for employment type). The ultimate goal of the Vocational strand is for learners to gain and maintain valuable employment post graduation. Students will have the opportunity to participate in on-campus and/or community-based internships in grades 10, 11, and 12, building a resume that contains ‘real-world’ employment experience.
