Universal Support
All students have access to high-quality, intentionally designed instruction aimed at meeting grade-level essential learning expectations. This foundational support ensures that every student receives rigorous, differentiated teaching that targets core skills and academic outcomes.

Targeted Support
For students who need additional assistance, Tier 2 offers additional time and targeted instruction to help them master or extend essential academic and behavioral standards. This may include small group interventions or personalized strategies to support students in reaching specific learning goals. Additionally, students who have a formal diagnosis and show evidence of need based on classroom functioning may qualify for an Accommodation Plan

Intensive Support (Learning Support)
Learning Support at ISB offers extra help to students who need specialized assistance to fully engage with and succeed in the ISB curriculum. We provide a range of support, from mild to intensive, depending on each student's individual needs. Students receiving Tier 3 services will have an Individual Learning Plan (ILP), which outlines specific goals and strategies tailored to their needs. These plans may vary in duration, with some students receiving short-term interventions and others benefiting from long-term support based on their progress and ongoing requirements.

Mild Level of Support Services
Students identified with a mild need for support services are typically a year or more behind grade-level expectations and require direct support targeting specific skills. Identification is based on school-based assessments, but the learning team may also consider recent diagnoses or past educational records.

Moderate Level of Support Services
Students identified with a moderate level of need for support services require highly individualized support, including one-on-one assistance through our ILA services and possible short-term modifications to the curriculum. Many have existing diagnoses or past IEPs. If not, an ISB school psychologist will conduct a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation and if required, a Functional Behavioral Assessment will be conducted.

Students with an intensive level of need for support services have been diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability and require a modified curriculum and graduation pathway. Enrollment requires an existing IEP or ILP and a current psychoeducational evaluation. These students are supported through the LCE program with highly individualized support throughout the day.

 In kindergarten through grade 12, EAL support is provided in scheduled, small-group sessions. Depending on need, students may receive some level of classroom support. In elementary school, students receive daily interventions, while in middle and high school, students may receive either daily or every other day support. Students in the ILA and LCE programs receive one-to-one support throughout the day in mainstream and self-contained classrooms. Occupational therapy-related services and speech/language-related services are provided in specialized classrooms. 

Our Intensive Literacy Support Program is a key component of ISB’s Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), designed to boost students’ reading skills and confidence for long-term academic success. Starting in August, the program runs in 8-week cycles throughout the year. Using multiple data points, we identify students at risk for reading difficulties and provide daily, targeted literacy support. This support temporarily replaces one World Language, PE class, HUB class, and classroom community time in each 6-day cycle. This program is intended to be short-term. Students are closely monitored, and if they reach their literacy goals ahead of schedule, they may exit the program before the full 8 weeks. Once students have achieved the necessary progress, they return to their regular schedule.

Our targeted academic remediation program is offered in grade 2 through grade 8 and provides individualized support in math and reading to help students close academic gaps during scheduled intervention blocks. The program is focused on building foundational skills, with the goal of helping students reach grade-level expectations and gain the necessary skills and confidence to succeed independently. Students in grades 2 through 5 receive daily targeted interventions and in grades 6 through 8 receive targeted interventions daily or every other day, based on their level of academic need. In MS this is a scheduled class called Intensive Studies. Student progress is closely monitored and goals are adjusted based on student response to intervention. 

The 1-1 Coaching Program is a half-semester intervention for High School students experiencing academic challenges. Students meet with a learning coach and develop a personal plan to assist them with their self-identified goals. Coaches help students with strategies or specific skills as appropriate. When not meeting with their coach, students work in the Learning Hub. Student progress is reviewed after 20 sessions when students typically exit, or are recommended for more intensive support. 

We offer math support to high school students who may not yet have the required math foundation for the rigorous IB curriculum. This support focuses on strengthening core math concepts and skills, ensuring students gain the confidence and proficiency they need to successfully transition into higher-level math courses.

Executive Functioning Skills
In middle school and high school, our learning support program also works to develop organization, time management, study strategies, and self-advocacy skills. This support empowers students to take ownership of their learning, enhance their academic performance, and become more independent and successful learners. 

The ILA program provides personalized, one-to-one support for students whose needs are not able to be adequately addressed through scheduled learning support classes. Students in this program are assigned an ILA who works with them throughout the day. Students are closely monitored and parents receive weekly updates and a formal monthly review of progress. This program has been designed for students with specific social, emotional, or academic needs and ensures each child receives the tailored assistance they need for success. Students who require long-term modified pathways and require support with adaptive functioning are not appropriate for this program. An additional fee applies for this service and is billed directly to the parent.

SLT services focus on articulation, pragmatic social skills, and expressive and receptive language development. This therapy supports students in improving their speech, language, and communication abilities, helping them interact more confidently and effectively in both academic and social settings.

Our Occupational Therapy services focus on improving sensory-motor integration, fine motor skills, handwriting, and sensory processing. OT helps students develop the physical skills necessary for academic success and self-regulation, fostering greater independence. An additional fee applies for this service and is billed directly to the parent.
