What is the IB Diploma Program?

The IB Diploma Program requires students to study six subjects in depth and breadth across a variety of disciplines. Students choose subjects from the subject groups: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and Arts.

Alongside these academic courses, IB Diploma students must complete three DP core subjects: Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), a program for experiential learning through co-curricular activities; Extended Essay, an independent 4,000-word research project; and Theory of Knowledge (ToK), which is an inquiry into the nature of knowledge.

This well-rounded, college-ready IB curriculum develops essential skills such as research, collaboration, time management, and critical thinking, which prepare students for higher education.

Where is the IB Diploma Recognized?

As of 2024, more than 5,900 schools in over 160 countries offer the IB Program, which is recognized by thousands of universities worldwide. In the United States, the IB Diploma Program is a well-known and accepted college-standard curriculum. Nearly every major US university, including Ivy League institutions, accepts IB diploma holders, and most applicants are granted college credit for high IB scores, allowing them to take advanced classes and graduate earlier.

Universities across the UK, including Oxford University, Cambridge University, and Imperial College of London, recognize the IB Diploma Program for entry into their undergraduate courses. The IB Diploma is also widely accepted for university admission in Europe; however, specific acceptance criteria and requirements may differ between countries and universities.

In countries within Asia and Australia, many universities regard the IB Diploma as a strong qualification for higher education. The IB organization works with over 600 schools across 29 countries in the Asia-Pacific region to offer the IB Diploma Program.

Do Colleges Accept IB Credits?

A major benefit of completing the IB Diploma is the potential to earn university credits upon admission. Many IB colleges and universities grant credits for Higher Level (HL) subjects with scores of 5 or higher. Accepting IB credits can allow students to skip introductory courses and take more advanced ones, which can help them save on tuition fees and finish their degree earlier than usual. Exact credit policies vary, so it’s important to check individual university websites or consult the school’s college counselor.
