The Grade 5 Quad came alive as Grade 5 students joined the High School American Sign Language (ASL) Club to celebrate International Day of Sign Language. This special collaboration gave students the chance to explore how sign language connects people in meaningful and inclusive ways.
Led by enthusiastic HS ASL Club members, the Grade 5 students learned a few simple yet powerful phrases in sign language, including how to ask someone’s name, introduce themselves, and express basic emotions. The session sparked curiosity and appreciation for the beauty of nonverbal communication.
To make the experience even more engaging, students also learned how to sign “cookie please” — a fun and memorable way to connect language with action. After practicing, each student received a cookie to decorate, turning the lesson into a joyful blend of learning, creativity, and community.
As they practiced together, students began to see that language isn’t just about words, it’s about connection, understanding, and respect. The experience opened their eyes to the power of communication in all its forms, and the importance of making everyone feel included.
