The Committee on Trustees guides the process of identifying, recruiting and proposing new trustees.  The Committee ensures that board policies are up-to-date, frequently reviewed, and immediately updated after any change. The committee also organizes the board's self-assessment; plans for leadership succession; and facilitates trustee professional development through orientation, training and ongoing education.

This includes but is not limited to:

• Coordinating and facilitating the Head of School Search.
• Finalizing and recommending the approval of the Board Policy manual and the Board Procedural Manual

• Establish the Committee on Trustees.
• Establish the Core Search Committee.
• Identify and work closely with search firm who will assist in the search activities which includes but is not limited to the identification of selection criteria and terms of reference, position advertisement and short listing of candidates, etc.
• Facilitate the identification of stakeholders' groups who will participate in the process.
• Assist in the preparation and orientation of new BOT members.
• Facilitates appropriate trustee professional development opportunities.
• Facilitate board's self-assessment

• Sept 2009: Finalize Charter for approval
• October 2010: Present completed BOT Policy Manual and Procedural Manual for approval
                          Present HoS Search timeline to BOT for approval
                          Solicit proposals from search firms (interview as necessary)
                          Appoint search firm
• November 2010: Form stakeholders' groups participating in search process
• December 2010: HoS/BOT Mid-year evaluation
• January 2011: Advertise position
• February 2011: Receive applications and come up with candidates' shortlist
• March  2011: Arrange on-site interview schedules
• April 2011: On-site interviews of short listed candidates
• May 2011: Selection and appointment of new Head of School

• Core Search Committee members will be able to give sufficient time to the tasks at hand.
• The process will be inclusive and transparent.
• Search will be carried out by an experienced and qualified search firm to be selected by the BOT.
• To promote transparency, a website/email address will be established so the Core Search Committee can receive comments and suggestions from interested community members throughout the process.
• All information pertinent to the search is confidential and will be managed to limit access to unauthorized people.
• The full Board of Trustees has the ultimate responsibility to select the new Head of School.
• The BOT and the Head of School will work in collaboration to ensure that the ISB Mission and objectives are realized.
• Coaching of new BOT members can help institutionalize the BOT's policies and prepare them for immediate participation.
• BOT meetings will be primarily about the consideration and establishment of long-term, ISB mission-related values.
• The BOT develops itself through ongoing education regarding good governance.
• The BOT maintains ongoing dialogues with the ISA community throughout the year through various methods (newsletters, BOT meetings, etc.).

• Competition from other schools for the same candidates and the need to move expeditiously without sacrificing the community input deemed to be essential to an open process.
• Frequent turn-over of board members thereby lacking the much-needed continuity and experience essential for good governance.
• Lack of BOT discipline and consistency in upholding board policies when confronted with challenging situations.

• Management of expectations of various stakeholders.
• Failure to speak with "one voice" regarding sensitive issues, resolutions are not reached and decisions are not made.
