Nurturing and Supportive Environment

At ISB we employ systems that nurture and support all members of our learning community.  Our environment promotes physical and emotional well-being.

In our community a sense of belonging is supported in systematic, recognizable ways.  Observable mechanisms include health and counseling services that operate at optimal levels to diagnose and strengthen the healthy functioning of all constituents. Extra-curricular activities provide a place outside of students' daily classroom experiences where a sense of connection with others, and opportunities to exhibit excellence, are cultivated.  We provide and enforce clear and consistent norms of behavior and deportment which create a school atmosphere that encourages empathy, creativity, safety and a concern for others at all levels of our school. 

The foundation of our nurturing and supportive school environment is our concern for the individual.  To that end, we recognize and cherish the basic nature of each child under our care.  It is our responsibility to actively demonstrate sensitivity to the unique needs, styles and functioning modes of our charges. This consciously created empathetic atmosphere influences and guides our daily interactions at ISB.  Students, teachers and administrators foster good character by monitoring their own actions; we treat others fairly and with respect.

The high morale in our community is based on our mutual feeling of empowerment.  Systems of management are designed and redesigned that ensure democratic participation and high levels of productivity from all staff.  We accept the responsibility of using our power to positively impact our learning organization.   Honest feedback from students, teachers, parents, administrators, and any other concerned individuals in our community is welcomed. We can talk to each other as equals, sharing common concerns and devising common solutions.  The excellent quality of life in ISB’s classrooms and workplace is nurtured by an infrastructure that actively supports the growth of the individual within the collective; we learn together and alone.  As a result, both student and adult performance is enhanced. 

Positive, creative tension is nurtured and supported at ISB, where it is safe to experiment and fail.  Our work is not only evaluated, but we are recognized as individuals of worth. We can identify and address our professional needs and desires without the fear of being judged and rejected. We are at home.
