Becoming experts in understanding and guiding their own learning
One of the transportable gifts that an ISB education offers involves each student acquiring knowledge about their own learning. Students develop an understanding of what motivates them, discover the ways in which they learn best and take responsibility for their own learning. They take control of their learning by determining and articulating which strategies work best for them. They are able to plan ahead and predict their performances on tasks, expressing their feelings as to which parts they find easy and difficult. They monitor their own work and know when they are making progress.
Self-assessment and Feedback
ISB students regularly engage in self-assessment, reflecting on what worked and what needs improving. Receiving prompt feedback on their learning, they take note of successes and build on them for the future, applying what they have learned to new situations. They learn from their mistakes, persevere through difficulties, and celebrate their successes.
Goal Setting
Engaged in self-assessment and goal setting, students are aware of their own capabilities, learning styles and interests. They learn how to form realistic and challenging goals and how to monitor their own progress. They are aware of possibilities for continuing study and of the effort needed to reach long term goals.
Group Learning
ISB students understand that learning is a social activity. They seek and are given help from others, and are aware of how teaming and group work can add to their ability to access knowledge. They understand the basic functions of group members and are able to identify their role in a group. They learn how and when to be leaders, how to develop leadership skills and how to be comfortable in a leadership role.
Skill Development and Support
The school incorporates thinking, self-assessment and reflection techniques in all subject areas to help students grow in their understanding of their own learning. Questions and activities promote students transferring their learning to new settings. Teaching strategies for accessing background knowledge, predicting outcomes, explaining thinking and planning ahead are incorporated into the curriculum. Problem solving strategies are taught and students are asked to explain their thinking in words and in pictures. Specific feedback is provided and self-assessment is taught and assessed at the earliest age. The school also supports parents in understanding their child’s learning and in how they can encourage growth. The school community acknowledges the importance of helping students take control of their own learning.
Life-long Learning
ISB students are engaged in their learning as a life-long process. They learn to set priorities with respect to their body, mind and spirit. Students feel supported and encouraged when faced with challenges. They come to understand their strengths and weaknesses and as a result, feel safe taking risks. Students talk confidently about how they learn and what helps them to succeed. This understanding will benefit them throughout their lives.
