Humanities in the eighth grade is composed of four units of study: identity, ethical consumerism, power and conflict. Political and social events are viewed from historical and modern perspectives. Short stories, novels, non-fiction texts, poetry and a visual and aural media accompany the units of study.
Language arts skills are examined and developed within the context of social studies units. Grammar, usage, mechanics and vocabulary are addressed in the context of students' work, and various writing techniques are covered in depth. Writing genres include persuasive and expository essays, research reports, and personal memoirs. Skills to be mastered include organization of writing, conventions, vocabulary usage, and literary technique. Our goals include helping your child to achieve and exceed the learning standards for language arts and social studies, and preparing your child for high school.
Humanities in the eighth grade is committed to fostering future global citizens capable of addressing complex issues in an ever-changing world.
