2012 English Language Institute (EAL Program)

The ISB Language Institute offers students an all-day, intensive English language program through beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses. Qualified EAL instructors provide knowledge, skills, and opportunities for students to use listening, speaking, reading, and writing for a range of communicative purposes. A focus on language learning strategies and study skills will prepare EAL students for the next grade level in an international school. Through an orientation program and with ample assistance, new students will learn how to study in an international school setting. The English Language Institute will recreate both the ISB school atmosphere and the expectations of high student performance.

The English Language Institute courses meet from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm Monday to Friday. Single session courses are structured to be four weeks in length while the full summer session provides students the opportunity to take two consecutive courses: a four-week course followed by a three-week session.

Students who attend the full summer session will be given a comprehensive English language test at the end of Session II. For current ISB students, this test will be used for advancement through the EAL program. For students seeking enrollment to ISB during the regular school year, this is the EAL admission test.

Enrollment Procedures

Please enroll in the appropriate level English course.

  • If you are an ISB student, check with your EAL teacher to determine which class you will attend.
  • If you are not an ISB Student, choose the class according to the number of years you have attended a school where the language of instruction is English

All ISB students will be tested at the end of the school year and all non-ISB students will be tested on the first day of summer school. The test results and the number of students enrolled will determin final placement for summer school.
